Helen Marsh
Consumer and retail writer for Out of Town Shopper.
Helen Marsh writes every guide on Out of Town Shopper. She is a consumer and retail writer with a particular interest in the everyday questions that come up on a shopping trip: whether a parking letter has to be paid, why a shop says it will only offer a credit note, who should take the old washing machine away, and why the supermarket opens an hour later than the shop next door on a Sunday.
She is not a lawyer, and nothing on this site is legal advice. Her approach is to go to the primary source, whether that is the legislation itself, official guidance or the rules published by an appeals service, and then explain it in plain English with the practical steps that follow from it.
What Helen covers
- Parking on private land, including parking charges and appeals.
- Getting around retail parks, including accessible shopping and EV charging.
- Opening hours and Sunday trading law across the UK.
- Consumer rights, from returning goods to buying large appliances.
How she works
Each guide starts from the questions shoppers actually ask, then works back to the rules. Helen checks every legal point against the current version of the legislation on legislation.gov.uk and guidance on GOV.UK or the equivalent devolved government site, and notes where the rules differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Where an area is changing, such as the private parking code of practice, she says so rather than presenting a draft as settled law. You can read more in how we research and our fact-checking policy.
